@UniNorthants launches Hair, Make-Up and Prosthetics for Stage and Screen course 

A new degree from the University of Northampton will equip graduates for a career in the make-up and special effects sector of the creative industries.

Graduates from the Hair, Make-Up and Prosthetics for Stage and Screen course could progress to a career in television, film, theatre and other performance industries.

The course, which launches in September 2021, will offer a mix of theoretical and practical work, with students also able to take advantage of work experience opportunities with the University’s contacts within the regional and national creative industries.

Programme Leader, Anthony Stepniak, said: “Applicants who feel they might not have a high level of practical skills need not worry, as we will help each student to develop their skill base over their three years of study. They will be taught by experts from within the relevant creative industries and the course will have a heavy focus on practical learning. This will allow students to develop key techniques, methods and approaches to hair, make-up and prosthetics.”

In addition to practical teaching, students will also explore theoretical aspects of the industry. The course will include a focus on inclusivity and diversity, which is an essential area for those wishing to progress in the industry.

Anthony said: “Students will be interrogating the importance of hair, make-up and prosthetics in relation to the notion of identity – whether that be racial, gendered, sexual, professional or neurodiverse.”
