Sky Sports News journalist named Regional Apprentice of The Year
Sky Sports News journalist Maddy Morrison has been named Regional Apprentice of the Year for London.
The 20-year-old from Tadworth in Surrey who was coached by PA Training, in partnership with Seetec Outsource, beat off competition from Google UK’s Ben Miles to win Advanced Apprentice of the Year in the National Apprenticeship Service Awards.
She was presented with the accolade at a ceremony for London finalists at Glaziers Hall, central London. Other awards included Employer of the Year, Rising Star of the Year and Apprenticeship Champion of the Year. There were further Apprentice of The Year categories including Intermediate Apprentice of the Year and Higher/Degree Apprentice of the Year.
Maddy will now represent London in her category in the National Awards taking place in central London, on November 27, alongside eight other regional finalists.
She was awarded an overall Distinction grade in her Level 3 Junior Journalist apprenticeship, as well as attaining a Gold Standard NCTJ Diploma in Journalism as part of her qualification.
She has secured a permanent position at Sky Sports News, working as a co-producer.
Maddy said: “My apprenticeship has been a life changing opportunity that has provided a springboard for my career. Not only have I been trained to NCTJ standards, I’ve been able to work in journalism and live my dream. I’d like to thank Sky Sports News for all the support and guidance.”
Journalism training head at Sky Sports News, Laurie Tucker, said: “Maddy has more than fulfilled the potential she demonstrated when we appointed her two years ago. An NCTJ Diploma has supported her career and she’s now forging ahead ably proving the value of apprenticeships.”
Roz McKenzie, apprenticeship training manager at PA Training, coached Maddy through the NCTJ Diploma and work-based learning. She said: “Maddy has surpassed all our expectations and has been a pleasure to teach. She’s a terrific role model for her apprentice colleagues and for apprenticeships in general. PA Training has been delighted to work with her.”

The awards, now in their 16th year, aim to showcase the diverse range of apprentices, employers and individuals working in the apprenticeships sector.
