Tessa Munt, MP for Wells and the PPS for Vince Cable, chats with FE News on the stage of the Youth Employment Convention, straight after her talk on her 2015 manifesto ideas.

Tessa calls for a focus on areas where she expects to see rapid growth and sustained employment opportunities. She identified two main areas to tackle youth employment: one through efficient use of land and housing, and the other by developing traineeships.

Tessa’s suggests utilising local authority land to address not just employment needs, but also housing requirements for local commuities. She believes using land more strategically, particularly if removing the price of land from the cost of house building, by offering auctions of land owned by local authorities and the public sector, would provide young people with the opportunity to quickly develop building trade and  support service skills.

Tessa’s second suggested idea was to utilise traineeships by combining classroom and work experience. She explains that if each traineeship had £2,000 – £5,000 it would make a massive long term difference to the employability of the young person.
