Institutes of technology will play an important role in transforming higher technical STEM education across the country, helping to improve skills, growth and opportunities.
We have established the first wave of institutes of technology.
Institutes of technology wave 2 update
The institutes of technology wave 2 competition, with £120 million capital funding available, was open to proposals from any local enterprise partnerships (LEP) areas that are currently not covered by an institute of technology. This enables every region in England to apply for a high-quality institute of technology.
Stage 1 of the 2 stage institute of technology competition closed in December 2020. We received 15 applications, following assessment 13 applicants have been invited to progress to stage 2 which will test the viability of their proposals in more detail.
The lead applicants of the institute of technology wave 2 proposals are:
- Blackpool and The Fylde
- Cheshire College South and West
- Chichester College Group
- DN Colleges Group
- Furness College
- Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group
- Solent University
- South Essex College
- University of Derby
- University of Hertfordshire
- University of Leicester
- University of Salford
- University of Suffolk
The wave 2 applicants overview provides details for each institute of technology on the:
- FE and HE partnership
- sector specialisms proposed
The second and final stage of the wave 2 institute of technology competition, currently underway, will test the viability, feasibility and deliverability of proposals in more detail. We will be announcing the results of wave 2 later in the year.
