From education to employment

Businesses hear about Barnsley’s regeneration plans

L-R – Keynote speaker, Andrew Osborn, Group Leader for Regeneration Projects, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Peter Lawrence, Barnsley College’s Head of Business Development.

Businesses across the region attended a networking event on Friday 9 March to hear about the planned Barnsley regeneration projects and apprenticeships.

Delegates heard from Andrew Osborn, Group Leader for Regeneration Projects at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, who talked about the current and planned developments within Barnsley.

Peter Lawrence, Head of Business Development at Barnsley College also gave an apprenticeship update, which included sharing how employers can benefit from employing an apprentice, the funding reforms, the new apprenticeship standards and how Barnsley College can help to recruit an apprentice or up-skill an existing workforce.

Andrew said: “It’s really important for the Council to engage with the local business community so we can continue to support the local supply chain and the economy, Barnsley College plays a really important role within that, so when the opportunity arose to support this event, it was something that the Council was happy to do.”

Peter added: “Barnsley and the surrounding areas are changing. It’s an exciting time with re-development in the town centre and at junctions 36 and 37 of the M1, so there’s a lot of opportunity for existing and new businesses. However, maximising those opportunities is often dependent upon having enough skilled resources in place. This event allowed us to update and inform employers about the training and apprenticeship programmes available to support the recruitment of new employees and the development of their existing workforce.”

If you would like to find out how the College can support your business to recruit an apprentice or to develop your existing employees’ skills, email the Business Development Team or call on 01226 216 166.
