From education to employment

Newham College amongst top 100 employers for Diversity & Equality

Newham College has been recognised at the National Awards ceremony for being ranked 72 in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index, (WEI) 2017. Only one other further education college, (Nottingham College) made it into the top 100 employers and there were a total of 439 applications. The top 100 list is based on the results of Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index 2017, the thirteenth published by the charity.

This year’s top employer in the index was Lloyds Banking Group.

College Principal, Di Gowland said:
“This is yet another landmark achievement recognising the extent and depth of the College’s commitment to and action on equality and diversity on behalf of the communities we serve.”

“Special thanks are due to all staff who contributed to the development of the College’s equality and diversity policies and practice, and to the LGBT Committee and Straight Allies who continue to further this agenda.”

WEI is a benchmarking tool used by employers to help ensure that LGBT employees can be themselves in the workplace. Participating employers demonstrate work in 10 areas of employment policy and practice, from training to community engagement. Additionally, staff from across each organisation complete an anonymous survey about their experience at work – Over 90,000 employees completed the survey which, is one of the largest nationally.

Stonewall said:
“Each featured organisation has done exceptional and pioneering work to help make sure that every LGBT employee can be themselves in the workplace.”
