End Digital Poverty Day is a nationwide initiative in the UK dedicated to raising awareness about the pressing issue of digital poverty and the digital divide. It is marked on 12th September 2023 and is supported by the UK’s technology leaders and professional communities. The day aims to draw attention to the exacerbated gap in digital access, especially due to the impact of COVID-19, and to encourage collective action to address digital poverty.
Digital poverty refers to the significant disparities in access to essential digital tools and resources. This issue has become more pronounced, with nearly 20% of children lacking adequate online access for learning. Approximately 1.7 million households in the UK lack internet access, and 1.4 million households rely solely on mobile data to connect online. The problem extends to adults over 65, with 30% not using the internet or having the necessary devices and skills for basic digital activities.
Digital poverty is a complex issue intertwined with various personal and social challenges, including financial poverty, deprivation, and social inequalities. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing gaps. Causes include economic inequality, limited digital infrastructure, disparities in education, and geographic challenges. It is emphasized that addressing digital poverty requires a holistic approach, going beyond providing devices and connectivity. It involves addressing multiple factors such as tech support, motivation, confidence, skills, opportunities, safety, and inclusive design.
